What Happened Today
BE closed at $184.89, down 14.91% on July 24, 2026. Volume came in at 15.89M shares vs an 11.84M daily average — elevated but not extreme. The move tracked peers FuelCell Energy and Plug Power, pointing to sector-wide risk-off and profit-taking after a strong run, not a company event. No earnings miss, no guidance cut, no news.
Context matters: BE ran from its 52-week low of $32.52 to a high of $351.28 — nearly 10x — before this pullback. Shares are still up dramatically over the past year. The sector's energy-transition and AI-power narrative attracted fast money, and fast money leaves just as fast.
The Business (Not the Stock)
Bloom Energy makes solid oxide fuel cell systems — the Bloom Energy Server — that convert natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen into electricity on-site. It's an electrochemical reaction, not combustion, which means lower emissions and higher efficiency than a gas turbine. Customers get reliable, always-on power that bypasses grid constraints.
That last point is the AI hook. Data centers need uninterruptible, dense power. The grid can't build fast enough. Bloom's proposition — put a fuel cell behind your data center fence, skip the utility queue — is exactly the message hyperscalers want to hear. Schwab Network called BE a "reliable energy aspect" of the AI infrastructure trade as recently as July 22.
Q1 2026 Numbers
- Revenue: $751.05M — +130.4% YoY | Beat est. $539.94M by $211M
- EPS: $0.44 vs $0.12 est — beat by 242%
- TTM Revenue: $2.45B (+56.5% YoY)
- FY2025 Revenue: $2.02B (+37.3%)
- FY2026 Revenue Estimate: $3.74B (+84.9%)
That Q1 beat is not a rounding error. $211M above consensus on revenue and 242% EPS beat is a blowout. Either the order book filled faster than expected, or large deployments pulled forward. Either way, the business is not slowing.
Margins and Cash Flow — The Real Story
- Gross Margin: 29.57% TTM — up from 14.83% in FY2023
- Operating Margin: 6.70% TTM — first meaningful operating profit
- Free Cash Flow: $229.56M TTM — positive and accelerating
- Net Income: $6.03M TTM (barely, but positive)
Two years ago Bloom was burning $456M in free cash flow annually. Today it's generating $229M. That's a $685M swing in free cash flow in 24 months. Gross margins nearly doubled from the 2023 trough. The business crossed from "promising but unprofitable" to "it actually works" — and the market priced that in aggressively before today's pullback.
FY2026 consensus estimates model gross margin expanding to 33.27% and operating income of $527M. If those hold, BE looks like a very different company by year end.
Valuation
- Price (July 24 close): $184.89
- Market Cap: ~$52.85B
- 52-Week Range: $32.52 – $351.28
- Forward PE: 73.44x
- Price/Sales: 21.5x TTM
- Analyst Consensus: Buy (29 analysts) | Avg PT: $286.20 | JPM PT: $346
The valuation is not cheap. At 21.5x trailing sales and 73x forward earnings, BE is priced for execution. J.P. Morgan raised their price target to $346 on July 21 — three days before this drop. Analyst average is $286.20, implying 54.8% upside from today's close. The spread between analyst targets ($70 low, $390 high) tells you there's genuine disagreement about how fast the data center pipeline materializes.
Risks
- Valuation compression: A 73x forward PE has no margin for error. One guidance miss and this sells off harder.
- Natural gas dependency: Most deployments still run on gas. If the hydrogen transition takes longer than expected, the clean-energy narrative weakens.
- Competition: Generac, Caterpillar, and grid-scale battery storage all compete for the same data center backup/primary power wallet.
- Sector correlation: As today proved, BE trades with the fuel-cell sector. A PLUG or FuelCell blowup pulls BE down regardless of Bloom's own results.
Position Framework
- Setup: Post-selloff entry in a fundamentally improving business with a clean AI catalyst
- Starter entry: $180–$185 (current level) — small position, sector risk is real
- Add zone: $155–$165 if sector selloff continues (former breakout area)
- Trim zone: $250–$270 (toward analyst consensus)
- Target: $286 (analyst avg) to $346 (JPM)
- Invalidation: Close below $140 with volume, or guidance cut at next earnings (Q2 expected late July)
Q2 2026 earnings are due late July. That's the next binary. A second straight massive beat confirms the data center thesis is accelerating. A miss or reduced guidance would punish this name hard given the multiple. Size accordingly — this is not a set-it-and-forget-it position at 21x sales.
